The most hours I’ve put in playing these goes in this order: marvel, Arkham, lotr. This was over a period of a year, so that I could sufficiently put enough time into each of them. The order I played them in was: marvel, Arkham, and then lotr. If don't want to deck build that much and want a very combat focused game then Marvel is better.Ī couple other discussion threads on this topic you can check out If you like building decks and a wide variety of game play, then LotR is the way to go. There are few scenarios that diversify away from that but no where near to variety you will see in LotR. Marvel's game play is much more boss battle focused. The difficulty does eventually ramp up but it takes a while to get there. Marvel got to leverage the lessons of LOTR and the core box is much more smooth introduction. You will want one of the starter decks or the Fellowship expansion to expand your card pool. If you get only revised Core and jump to Angmar Awakened it is very difficult. The revised releases jump to the later cycles where it's much more polished, but the card pool was much larger at the original release. Many of the early ones are rough because it is the first coop LCG. Lord of the Rings has 10 years of scenarios (over 100). Gameplay wise it's not really a fair comparison. There are cards to enable playing spheres that don't match your hero(es). Lord of the Rings you can use any and all spheres if you want to. Less is generally better because chances of drawing your best cards but still another limitation. You also have to make a 40 to 50 card deck.

Then for more most heroes, you can only pick one aspect (sphere in LotR, color in Magic). Marvel in contrast once you pick a hero, you have to include 15 cards. I like building decks and LotR is wide open to how I want to build the deck. LotR is the closest to Magic the Gathering that I played a lot for 8 years and will still play now but opportunities to do so are rare. I play both and Lord of the Rings LCG is far and away my favorite of the 2. Marvel is a great choice to try out unless the others seem more interesting since you get more game in the core box. It's really going to come down to which of these mechanically appeal to you. Otherwise I'd say my ranking is: Arkham > LoTR > Marvel But if Marvel had Arkham's system, I'd love the theme more way more as Arkham is my least favorite theme of the three despite it being my favorite of the three. Personally my favorite is Arkham LCG mechanically speaking, which is not either of those two. Was recently repackaged I think, so not sure if the core set is the same, has more, etc. Bonus points if you can construct an all-in-one deck that can tackle many scenarios. You are quite literally constructing decks to solve very specific puzzle-like scenarios and there is a definite emphasis on comboing powers/cards/heros etc. LoTR LCG is the most construction heavy of the three. The core game alone not that much depth, IMO. It's deck construction is the least invasive but can have some depth to it if you want to invest into it, especially as you get more cards. It also is the most true-solo (playing a single character/hand) friendly of the three.
#Lord or the rings lcg pathless country gets 4 quest points pro#
It's well made but it also is the least complex of the bunch, which is a perfect pro for some groups and a potential con for others.
